Sydney architecture: Iconic Skyscrapers

A shot whilst shooting some Sydney commercial photography in CBD reveals an interesting juxtaposition of some of the finer Sydney architecture tower buildings and the historic castellated building that is home to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

From the right of the frame, there is Governor Phillip Tower by Denton Corker Marshall, next left is Aurora Place by Renzo Piano, then Chifley Tower by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and finally, poking into the frame at the back is Sir Norman Forster’s Deutsche Bank Building.

The Conservatorium’s home is one of the few remaining examples of the work of Francis Greenway. Transported to Sydney in 1814 for forgery, Greenway was soon given his ticket of leave because of his architectural qualifications. Greenway’s building operated as the stables, offices and coach house for the Government House for almost a century and was part of Governor Macquarie’s romantic scheme for this part of Sydney.

Architectural Marvels of Sydney: A Photographic Journey Through Iconic Skyscrapers

Sydney, Australia, is renowned for its iconic architecture, with the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge being the most recognizable landmarks. However, the city is also home to an array of modern skyscrapers that present unique photographic opportunities for architecture enthusiasts. In this blog post, I’ll explore four iconic buildings in Sydney’s skyline – Governor Phillip Tower by Denton Corker Marshall, Aurora Place by Renzo Piano, Chifley Tower by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, and Sir Norman Foster’s Deutsche Bank Building – and discuss their photographic appeal.

Governor Phillip Tower by Denton Corker Marshall

Located in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District, Governor Phillip Tower is a striking example of modern architecture. Designed by Australian architectural firm Denton Corker Marshall, the 64-story building boasts a sleek, minimalist design with a distinctive triangular plan. The tower’s sharp angles, clean lines, and reflective glass façade create a wealth of photographic opportunities, especially when capturing the building’s interaction with natural light and its surroundings. Experiment with different perspectives and vantage points, such as street-level views or capturing its reflection in nearby buildings, to create visually striking images of this architectural gem.

Aurora Place by Renzo Piano

Aurora Place, designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, is a unique and visually stunning addition to Sydney’s skyline. The building features a curvilinear façade, evoking the sails of the nearby Sydney Opera House, and its glass exterior reflects the colours of the sky, creating a dynamic appearance that changes throughout the day. Photographers will find endless inspiration in the building’s graceful curves and ever-changing reflections, capturing the essence of Sydney’s vibrant atmosphere. For an added challenge, try to incorporate the surrounding cityscape or natural elements, such as nearby trees or the sky, to create a sense of harmony between the building and its environment.

Chifley Tower by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates

Chifley Tower, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, is a commanding presence in Sydney’s Central Business District. Standing at 244 meters tall, the 53-story building features a unique, stepped design with a bold, angular shape. The tower’s distinctive form and reflective glass façade offer countless photographic possibilities, from dramatic wide-angle shots that emphasize its towering height to abstract, close-up images that highlight its geometric patterns. The building’s elegant lighting scheme also makes it an excellent subject for nighttime photography, as it casts a warm glow on the surrounding cityscape.

Deutsche Bank Building by Sir Norman Foster

The Deutsche Bank Building, designed by the acclaimed architect Sir Norman Foster, is a sleek and sophisticated addition to Sydney’s architectural landscape. The 39-story tower features a minimalist design with a curved, glass façade that reflects the surrounding cityscape and sky. The building’s simplicity and elegance make it a perfect subject for architectural photography, with its clean lines and subtle curves creating a sense of harmony and balance. Experiment with different compositions, such as framing the building against the sky or using nearby structures as a counterpoint, to capture the Deutsche Bank Building’s understated beauty.

Sydney’s skyline is a treasure trove of architectural masterpieces, offering a wealth of photographic opportunities for those with a keen eye for design. The Governor Phillip Tower, Aurora Place, Chifley Tower, and Deutsche Bank Building each present their unique visual appeal, inviting Sydney photographers to explore their intricate details, bold shapes, and stunning reflections. Whether you’re a seasoned architectural photographer or simply looking to expand your creative horizons, these iconic buildings are sure to inspire and captivate you with their remarkable designs.
